We are often asked to make inflatables for major sporting events and we understand the impact they can have on large crowds of sports fans and spectators. When we were asked to create something for the Tour de France 2014, we set about designing and creating an inflatable that captured the spirit of the prestigious cycling race.
The opening stage of the race, known as the Grand Départ, took place in Yorkshire, starting off from the city of Leeds. Our giant cold air filled inflatable yellow bike was displayed outside Leeds Town Hall. It was continuously inflated with a mains operated fan blower and stayed in place for the whole week prior to the start of the Tour de France. The BBC reported that one million people gathered in Leeds to witness the opening ceremony!
Our inflatable cycle shows just how sophisticated custom shaped inflatables can be. Emblazoned with the slogans “Get on your bike Leeds” and “Cycling starts here”, the inflatable bicycle effectively provided a witty focal point for the event. It also contributed to the overall drive to rejuvenate tourism in the area, helping to create a buzz and some visual excitement around the Tour de France visiting Yorkshire. We were proud to be part of the spectacle of such an historic sporting occasion.
It took us four weeks to produce the Tour de France yellow bicycle and Leeds City Council was delighted with the result. It was certainly an eye-catching way to publicise both the city and the sporting occasion.
